The Used Diaper Separation and Treatment System |Initiatives for Innovation
Recycling used disposable paper diapers to reduce waste and GHG emissions

To introduce the Used Diaper Separation and Treatment System, the system to separate and treat used disposable paper diapers.
As becoming severe in the waste problem, focusing on the used disposable paper diapers recycle which is expected to increase in the future
The Kurita Group considers building of a circular economic society our materiality and is working on waste recycling and reducing resource inputs. As one of these efforts, we paid attention to the increased use of disposable paper diapers due to proceeding with the aging society and were challenged to create innovation in this area.
In Japan, used disposable paper diapers are mainly disposed of as general waste and incinerated at facilities of local governments or waste disposal companies. If disposable paper diapers were recycled without being disposed of, this would reduce the amount of waste incinerated and the energy use and CO₂ emissions associated with incineration.

Separating process of used disposable paper diapers by the Used Diaper Separation and Treatment System to realize material recycling
The Used Diaper Separation and Treatment System can sterilize, wash, and decompose used disposable diapers and then sort them into plastic and pulp, enabling them to be recycled. The sorted plastics and pulp can be used as energy made into solid fuel or recycled and utilized as raw materials for recycled plastics. In addition, this system has a bag-ripping function, allowing used disposable diapers to be put into the machine while still in plastic bags and sorted, making it hygienic and efficient.

Aiming for further utilization of used disposable paper diapers
In addition to the used disposable paper diapers discharged from commercial facilities such as nursing homes and hospitals that had demonstration tests and others, we will try to expand the scope of those processed by the system to them being disposed of as household waste. In addition, we will develop and expand technologies and services that optimally utilize limited or renewable resources in the optimal way, such as recycling and expanding the use of recycled materials in collaboration with diaper manufacturers and material manufacturers, and converting treated water, including pulp, into energy through the application of methane fermentation technology.
